Geometric group theory is an expanding area of the theory of more general discrete groups, drawing on geometric models and algebraic techniques. Loosely speaking, this structure by itself is sufficient only for developing analysis on the manifold, while doing geometry requires, in addition, some way to relate the tangent spaces at different points, i.e. a notion of parallel transport. My main current interest is in developing exact mathematical models of topologically constrained random walks and polymer networks using Riemannian and symplectic geometry.
